Embark on an epic journey into the Amazon rainforest and discover the symphony of life in its natural habitat. Unfold the secrets of this vast ecosystem on an amazon tour expedition aboard a luxurious riverboat.
During the day, explore the rainforest canopy on foot, atop soaring ceiba trees that reach to 200 feet and hear endangered scarlet macaws chattering in the sky. At night, witness the mysterious realm of frogs, nocturnal insects and other critters that make their home in this wild, yet beautiful, place.
Our Amazon adventure starts in vibrant Iquitos, the gateway to Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem. From there, we’ll set sail on a five-night cruise along the Peruvian Amazon River and its tributaries, including Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. We’ll also visit a traditional riberenos (river people) village and learn how the villagers have used indigenous medicinal plants and herbs for generations. Plus, by special arrangement, you can meet a shaman (medicine man) and participate in a ceremonial tree-planting ceremony dedicated to ensuring the well-being of this pristine rainforest.
The Amazon Basin owes a great intellectual debt to one man: Tom Lovejoy. The late ecologist, National Geographic Explorer at Large, and longtime Society advisor, was deeply committed to saving the rainforest. His commitment to the region lives on today in the books he left behind, the people he inspired, and a new program the Society is launching in partnership with Rolex.
National Geographic and Rolex are Amazon boat trip partnering on science-based expeditions to explore, study, and document change in some of the planet’s most unique regions. Read more.
As the mighty Amazon delivers 20 percent of the world’s river water to the sea, it’s a vitally important habitat for wildlife—but it’s also home to hidden wonders that scientists want to uncover. To do so, we’re turning the spotlight on an area often overlooked: the flooded forest at the headwaters of this immense system.
On this expedition, you’ll join experts in the field to explore this largely hidden world on foot, by skiff and boat, and with the help of a team of intrepid volunteers. You’ll learn about the countless species that call this region home, the challenges facing the Amazon and its wetlands, and what you can do to help.
